Gin Kings, Fuel Masters jockey for position

BARANGAY Ginebra tries to solidify spot in the Top 4 while Phoenix Super LPG aims to crack the Top 8 as they duke it out in the PBA Philippine Cup Friday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

Though on a rollercoaster ride, the Gin Kings are at joint fourth with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters at 3-2, half game behind the third-running San Miguel Beermen (4-2). Pacesetting Magnolia is at 6-0 followed by NLEX at 5-1.

Coach Tim Cone's troops, coming from a big win on the road versus Converge (85-66) in San Fernando, Pampanga on Saturday, hope to finally nail back-to-back victories and create momentum heading to the final half of the elims.

After two previous wins, the Gin Kings suffered losses to the Beermen (93-104) and the Road Warriors (86-89) in a shaky conference start.

But hopes are high Scottie Thompson and his teammates are to start a run, ahead of a killer stretch where they play top contenders Meralco, Magnolia, TNT Tropang 5G and Rain or Shine.

They build momentum for that in taking on the Fuel Masters in the 7:30 p.m. Friday mainer at the PhilSports Arena then the Blackwater Bossing on May 23 at the same playing venue.

But Cone is definitely not looking past the Fuel Masters, who have claimed scalps of favored rivals Meralco (109-97) and TNT (95-81).

The last time out, the Fuel Masters put up a fight in the early minutes versus the Beermen but faded away in the second half of a 92-111 defeat.

With a 2-4 slate, the Fuel Masters can bump off the Meralco Bolts at eighth place with a win over the Kings.(SB)
